“If I hadn't been in the TC program, I
doubt very much I'd be where I am right now-teaching Jr. High English in
Crownpoint, NM on the Navajo Nation as a part of Teach for America.”
Sharlene
Crawford, Bradley University |

“As a liberal arts student, I found the
Transforming Communities semester to be a great bridge between my
undergraduate experience and my later coursework in a public policy
masters
program.”

“I think this is one of the best college
experiences I've had. This semester has made me seriously consider
following some-type of joint graduate degree track in both planning and
public policy. I originally came to learn the background on urban and
national issues, but I'm leaving with an interest to continue in the
public policy field.”
Aaron Eckerle,

“I
partly owe my path to the exposure you provided for me during our time
together. All those hikes over DC paid off. I will never forget this
time.”
Ashley Richbourg,

“So many of my ideas about public policy,
non-profits, advocacy, and social change are rooted in things we
discussed in the seminar. During the field placement part of the
Emerson Program, I will be working in a community to help the local
organization I am placed with identify ways to combine community
resources to reduce the existence of hunger. This type of work
reminds me so much of the assets/liabilities approach to public policy
we discussed in class and of the final project for the seminar.
Knowing that I have completed similar work gives me great confidence
as I go into the Emerson Program. I am also very excited to put those
skills to use in a real-life setting.”

“I will always be thankful for my
experience at American University in Transforming Communities. It has
and always will shape my life long decisions. I will never forget the
variety of topics, lectures and opportunities... I feel
a much deeper understanding of the world due to this experience. The
knowledge gathered during my "Washington Semester" seems to come up over
and over through the months/years of my life. Even now as I look forth
to my role as a career woman and a future mother, I reflect consistently
back to our discussions of the role of mothers, day-care, careers, and
social policy.”

"I learned more about the real world and
what I wanted to do with my life during my semester in the Transforming
Communities program, than the rest of my college career combined. It
opened my eyes to so many possibilities of how I could positively
affect change in my world. The speakers were engaging; the
projects--rewarding; and the internship-- challenging. I'd take part in
this program again in a heartbeat."
Molly Young, DePauw University |
